Ferrous sulphate

Introduction

Ferrous sulphate is one of the most commonly used iron compounds in agriculture, medicine, and industry. It serves as an essential source of iron and plays a vital role in maintaining plant health and treating iron deficiency in humans.

What is Ferrous Sulphate?

Ferrous sulphate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula:

  • FeSO₄

It contains iron in the +2 oxidation state and is typically found as pale green crystals, often in the hydrated form FeSO₄·7H₂O (green vitriol).

Preparation of Ferrous Sulphate

Ferrous sulphate is prepared by reacting iron with dilute sulphuric acid:

[
Fe + H_2SO_4 → FeSO_4 + H_2
]

It is also obtained as a by-product during the cleaning (pickling) of steel.

Properties of Ferrous Sulphate

Physical Properties:

  • Pale green crystalline solid

  • Odorless

  • Soluble in water

  • Forms hydrated crystals (green vitriol)

Chemical Properties:

  • Easily oxidized to ferric sulphate on exposure to air

  • Forms acidic solutions in water

  • Reacts with alkalis to form iron hydroxide

Uses of Ferrous Sulphate

  1. Medicine

    • Widely used to treat Iron Deficiency Anemia

    • Acts as an iron supplement to increase hemoglobin levels

  2. Agriculture

    • Used as a fertilizer to correct iron deficiency in plants

    • Helps treat chlorosis (yellowing of leaves)

  3. Water Treatment

    • Used to remove impurities and control odor

  4. Industrial Applications

    • Used in the manufacture of inks, dyes, and pigments

    • Acts as a reducing agent in chemical reactions

  5. Cement Industry

    • Used to reduce chromium compounds in cement

Advantages

  • Cost-effective and easily available

  • Essential for plant and human health

  • Wide range of applications

Disadvantages

  • Can stain surfaces (rust-like marks)

  • Excess intake may cause health issues

  • Sensitive to air and moisture (oxidizes easily)

Safety Precautions

  • Store in airtight containers to prevent oxidation

  • Avoid inhalation and ingestion in large quantities

  • Use gloves while handling

  • Keep away from children

Ferrous sulphate is a highly useful compound with significant applications in healthcare, agriculture, and industry. Its role as an iron supplement makes it especially important for treating anemia and improving plant growth. Proper storage and controlled usage ensure its effectiveness and safety.
